the dog ate my homework

I'm not feeling too well tonight, and I'm a horrible procrastinator, so today's wishful wednesday will have to wait until tomorrow morning, I'm almost done, but it's time for bed so here is a little hint of what I've been wishing for this week . . .

talk to you tomorrow!!!

portland {part two}

I want to tell you more about our trip to Oregon!

Just a heads up this post is Suuuper photo heavy!!

My parents took a few days off while we were in town so we could hang out together.  We went to the Portland Art Museum, and saw the show they had up called  Allure of the Automobile.  There were so many cool cars!
I want the 1954 Plymouth Explorer Sports Coupe

and the 1957 Jaguar XK-SS Roadster.

The Man loved the Ferrari GT (Enzo Ferrari's own modified version)
(He took this photo with his iPhone - sorry for the quality)

The main reason we went to Portland for the week was to celebrate my Mom's 50th Birthday, that's right the 50th anniversary of Rebeccakah! (that's her birthday festival's name!)  So we spent Sunday and Monday at the coast.  We stayed at our favorite spot, the Inn at Otter Crest.  The hotel is cozy and secluded, and has access to it's own beach right next to the Devil's Punch Bowl.  Most of the hotels you pass as you drive down the coast are right on the street and either look run down or way too expensive.  The Inn at Otter Crest is off this windy road south of Depot Bay and north of Newport.

We stopped at McMenamins, and had some burgers

Mmmmm, look at all those mustard's!

And then we went down to the sand

We did what anyone would do when visiting the beach

We climbed rocks

Searched for rocks (Agate Hunting!)

and Took naps

It was all very romantic

We also went to go see the Devil's Punch Bowl

When the tide comes up a bit this cavern is filled with ocean waves, sometimes it splashes all the way up the sides and over the top to the look-out point (where we were).

The next day we went back down to the beach.  Low tide had been around 2am so we thought the water was going to be at about the same place as the day before.
But we were wrong. And quite happy to be wrong.

We were able to go a little further around some of the rocks and caves that jut-out into the ocean. Then the brave men hiked-up their shorts and were able to get to the other side . . . and then come back and carry me over.

We climbed up and began looking around.  We walked further and further and suddenly realized where we were.

INSIDE THE DEVIL'S PUNCH BOWL!!

It was so freakin' cool! The walls were a deep red and even though we were safe and the tide was low, the water sloshing into the bowl seemed unpredictable, as if it could swallow you up at any moment (and it could, I've heard the stories!).

There were some little tide pools as well.  We saw little crabs, and hermit crabs, sea anemones, and starfish.

It was quite a morning!

When we got back from the beach Andrew and I took the car and headed downtown.  He had to pick up some Stumptown Coffee from his boss, and I really wanted to show him Powells Books.  We spent so much time there we had to go feed the meter again, and that whole time we were only in the Orange room.

It was wonderful and we got some great steals to take home with us, which I'll tell you more about later!

The days kept passing, and I was afraid we weren't going to have time for Escape but we made it

And was it just as delicious as I remembered?
 No.
It was even better!!! Seriously, it's the best pizza from the West Coast all the way to New York itself!

There were a few places we didn't get to.  We wanted to try out PakPak, I keep hearing great things about it, and we when we walked passed it on Saturday it smelled awesome.  I also really wanted to go to Kenny and Zook's a delicatessen next to the Ace Hotel, but when we were in the neighborhood, looking at books at Powells, we had already eaten.  So, now we have somethings that we'll just have do to next time!

I already can't wait to go back!!!!

dream house {the sliding house}

Last week The Morning Man and I were flipping through the channels and stop on my go-to pick HGTV.  A show called Million Dollar Rooms was on and it was so upsetting . . . we got sucked right in.  I kept trying to leave the room, but The Man kept yelling "Get in here, you have to see this."

First there was a couple who wanted both an eight car garage and a ballroom so they combined the two to make a room with carrara marble floors and hand-painted frescoes, that the husband could park his boring BMW's in. There were large and gaudy bedrooms, entry ways, and pool rooms, all for millions of dollars.  It was one of those shows that just make you squirm, with a furrowed brow and a dropped jaw.

(EW!!)

But then, something amazing came on.  Next up was a house, and it was no ordinary house.  It was a sliding house.  The segment started by showing a man sitting in his all glass living area.  Outside is nothing but grass and trees and countryside, and then he began to explain his extraordinary feat.

Ross Russell and his wife Sally built a home, in Suffolk, England, with the help of an old school friend Alex de Rijke.  The look of the house is similar to a traditional East Anglian barn, but with one push of a very special button the surrounding roof and exterior walls move.

The glass living room/kitchen is made with very thick (very expensive) glass, to keep the space a reasonable temperature.  But in the cold winter months, or when the sun is scorching down, or when they just feel like a little more privacy they can push a button and within 6 minutes they have an enclosed room.  The buildings exoskeleton sits on railway tracks recessed into the terrace that surrounds the entire structure, and it's four electric motors are powered by car batteries!

From what I understand there isn't a pool yet, but they made the tracks extendable.  So if they do decide to put in a pool, it too can benefit from a retractable roof!

All the doors match up to a corresponding opening in the exterior, and they made sure that there is always a way to get out in case the moving structure stops short.

The Man and I kept joking about leaving the car too far out.  Oops! There goes the front end of the motorcycle!

The house is absolutely beautiful, and the shape, with it's red timber cladding, is actually designed to look like a Monopoly Hotel! I would love to lay on the floor of the living room and stare up at the stars.  Everything else on that show was over-the-top (in a bad way) and really upsetting, but I'm glad we kept watching so I could see this place.

The Sliding House = A Dream House

air drying

p.p.s. I don't care what breed of dog we get just as long as we can air dry it like this

wishful wednesdays {pups}

One thing this Lazy Lady does best is fantasize about the future.  I'm not very good at living "in the now," I'm always thinking about the next recipe we should make, or couch we should buy, or city we'll live in, or job I could have, and where we'll be in 1, 3, 5, or 15 years.  It's not really the healthy way to live, buuuut sometimes I come up with some really great futures. . .

I've realized recently that I've gone on a little interiors kick with my Wednesday wishings, but there's more than just mudrooms and backsplashes that this girl daydreams about.  I'm talking about a loving companion, a furry four legged friend, a fluffy cuddle bug.  Yes, that's right, a little pup! Sure the man makes a very loving companion but I can't hold his face in my hands and talk baby-talk to him about belly rubs and going poopy. (Technically I could but I don't think he'd be very happy with me).

This past weekend we dog sat for our friends.  It was just for Saturday to Sunday, but it was enough to make my puppy lovin' to jump into hyper drive.  The dog we sat for is a light brown pitbull, she is a super sweet sleepy dog, and a great cuddler.  I loved having her around.

The man and I have talked about getting a dog for quite a while now, he wants a terrier, and I want a Bernese Mountain Dog . . . yeah, he wins.  I've warmed up to the idea of a tiny dog and now I'm really into it.  Apartment living definitely limits your options, and a small dog just makes more sense (as long as we can train it not to bark!!).  Growing up I had a Golden Retriever.  Her name was Winnie the Pooch and she was the BEST dog a girl could have.  Goldies are wonderful, loving dogs and one day when we have a house and a large back yard we'll have to get one, but for now here's a look at some tiny pups we're thinking about.

The man is keen on Australian Terriers.

Here is Kika.  His dog from back home at his mom's.  This picture is of her as a puppy.  Yeah, pretty darn cute.

(This isn't Kika, I found this photo on pinterest.)

When we were looking through dog pictures online the morning man told me that this is what Kika looks like when they let her hair get all shaggy.  What a rascal!

Since looking at different breeds of terriers I've become pretty excited about both Norfolk and Norwich terriers.  They are fairly similar.  They are both the smallest of the working terriers and from what I've read they also have the softest temperaments of all the terriers.

Norfolk

Norwich

All three of these breeds are all very similar in both their looks and their attitude.  I love their squatty legs and their chubby tummies, they are all just so darn cute! And I want one now!!!

I also love the way Westies look.

I have a hard time deciding whether I think they're cute and fun or super snooty.  I used to think the Cesar's Westie was the dog equivalent to that prissy little Fancy Feast cat.  But after looking at all these pictures I'm starting to change my mind.

All of these dogs look like fluffy stuffed animals . . . well, stuffed animals that poop and pee and make noises all the time.

Whether or not to get a dog is a hard decision.  I know too many people who rush into it, not realizing how much responsibility is involved.  And how long of a commitment it is.  I feel like so many people get pets because it's what they want at that moment, but don't think about the fact that this animal will be with them for the next 10 to 20 years of their life.  Honestly, when we do eventually get a dog, I don't think I could shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for a pure breed when there are so many dogs in the shelters all around the city in need of a good home.  But it's much easier on the heart strings to look up breeds than it is to look at the photos on the Humane Society or PAWS.  I almost bought a cat doing that!

Some friends of ours have a little Yorkie, and they might be going on vacation in September, so I'm super excited to get in some tiny puppy practice! But for now I will wish for a pup, and spend my spare time looking up doggy photos on google images.

How about you? Do you already have the perfect furry companion?  Are you itching to get a dog like me? Are you a cat person, and not into dogs at all?

Tell me, I want to know!

p.s. I LOVE Cats! We have four back at my home in Portland.
